How do I find my Time Lord for the year?

I received this question on Instagram and thought it might interest others, so I am answering it here. And if you have no idea what a Time Lord is, don’t worry, I've got you.

What is a Time Lord?

Your Time Lord / Time Lady for the year is based on what astrologers call Annual Profections. It is one of the traditional timing techniques astrologers use to determine the quality of the year ahead. Starting at birth (age 0), each sign (and house if using Whole Sign) of the chart gets an entire year of focus, with greater emphasis on that area of life.

Because each zodiac sign has a ruling planet, Annual Profections show us which sign, house(s), and planet (often referred to as the Lord of the House by traditional astrologers) will have greater significance in the person’s life over the coming year. It changes each year on your birthday. So, every sign gets a turn throughout your life and then repeats until you make your grand exit. It takes 12 years to go around one time, which happens to be the time it takes Jupiter to orbit the Sun and return to the sign it was in at the time of your birth. Pretty neat.

How do I know which sign is profected?

You will need a copy of your birth chart to do that. Using your current age and the chart below, find the sign number (1st-12th) corresponding to your current age, match it to your birth chart, and you’ll find out!

What planet is the ruler of my profected sign?

Once you’ve got your profected sign, use the diagram below to find the traditional ruler of that sign. That planet is your Time Lord for the year until your next birthday. Combined with other timing techniques, such as zodiacal releasing and transits, it helps us zero in on what to focus on over the coming year.

What about the profected house of the year?

I use Whole Sign most often for this timing technique, which is very straightforward and can tell you a lot about the year, and I’d say this technique fits best in Whole Sign houses because each house contains a whole sign. So the house and sign are the same.

If you are using a quadrant-based house system, such as Placidus or Porphry, it will still work. You’ll advance each year by zodiac sign instead of house. With quadrant houses, your profected sign may include multiple houses or only a portion of one, so if you have an intercepted sign, that sign and its ruling planet will still get a turn.

Houses contain a variety of topics, and which ones are relevant to you depends on many factors. Not all of them may apply, but some will.

Can you share an example of how to find the Time Lord?

Using the info above, aligned with my birth chart, I determine that I am in Pisces profection; therefore, my Time Lord is Jupiter. Pisces is also my Ascendant, which means it is my first house. So, the transits from Jupiter to planets in my natal chart take on added significance, along with other transits through the sign of Pisces, in addition to first house themes (self, body, appearance, raison d’être),

What else can I do with my Time Lord?

You can do much more with Annual Profections. It is a simple but powerful technique that can take you far. In addition to your chart ruler (the ruler of your first house), this is a great place to start if you want to develop a relationship with the timing of your life.
